David Fleming

David Fleming, group senior vice president and a corporate officer, joined Genzyme in 1984.  He is responsible for Genzyme’s Diagnostic Products businesses worldwide, and is heavily involved in specific corporate initiatives including Healthcare and Life Sciences Public Policy, China Development, FDA and CMS Reform and Medicare Reimbursement.
 
Mr. Fleming has responsibility for worldwide operations and distribution for the Genzyme Diagnostics division, including facilities in Framingham, Massachusetts; San Diego, California; Exton, Pennsylvania; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada; Maidstone, Kent, England and Russelsheim, Germany.  The division includes more than 200 marketed diagnostic products, including N-geneousÔ HDL and LDL cholesterol tests; and point-of-care rapid tests for influenza, strep A, pregnancy and infectious diseases.
 
Prior to Genzyme, Mr. Fleming held general management, sales and marketing positions during eleven years with Baxter Travenol (now Baxter International), with emphasis on diagnostics, therapeutics, and international business development.  He began his career as a high school teacher.
 
Mr. Fleming proactively represents Genzyme externally by devoting time, energy and resources into industry and community initiatives focused on health care, education, economic development, the environment and public policy.  Over the past decade, Mr. Fleming has helped to co-found four key New England based institutions: The Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council (MassMEDIC), New England Baptist Bone and Joint Institute (NEBJI), HealthPoint (a CareGroup Fitness and Wellness Center), and the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) for which he serves as a special advisor.  In June, 1998, the Mass High Tech Journal recognized Mr. Fleming as a Mass High Tech All-Star.
 
Locally, Mr. Fleming was the founding chair and is director emeritus of MassMEDIC.  As associate vice chair of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) he chairs the personnel and compensation committee and serves on the board, executive and long-range planning committees.  Mr. Fleming is a member of the governing board of the John Adams Innovation Institute (JAII), the JAII healthcare, venture formation, and research and analysis committees and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Collaborative Leadership Council.  He is the co-chair of GENZ-PAC, a member of the New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) board of visitors, and of the New England leadership group of the College of Wooster.  Mr. Fleming guest lectured at the Northeastern University High Tech MBA program from 1994-1999, and continues to lecture periodically at various academic institutions.
 
Nationally, Mr. Fleming serves on the board, medical technology, diagnostics and membership committees of the California Healthcare Institute (CHI), La Jolla, California, and is on the board of the Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), Washington, D.C.  Mr. Fleming chairs AdvaMed’s international China sub-committee, and is a member of AdvaMed’s value-of-technology, payment, membership, Diagnostics Sector committees, and the AdvaMedPAC. 
 
Globally, Mr. Fleming serves on the boards of Genzyme Japan K.K. and Genzyme Biopharmaceutical Consulting Co., Ltd., China.  In 2006 he was named a certified industry consultant to the municipality of Beijing.
 
Mr. Fleming was born and raised near Cleveland, Ohio, and serves on the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center Supporting Foundation Board in Bay Village, Ohio.  He is an emeritus life member of the board of trustees of the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio from which he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree and a comprehensive teaching certificate.  With additional studies at the City of London College and Sir John Cass Art College, London, England, Mr. Fleming also received a masters of business administration from Pepperdine University.  Dave and Peggy Fleming have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and five grandsons, reside in Sherborn, Massachusetts, and serve as trustees of The Fleming Family Foundation.
